Taxis and airport transfers with child car seats in Thailand
Thai law requires a child seat for children aged 6 or under in private cars, but taxis and public transport are exempt, and a meter taxi from the rank cannot be reserved with a seat. The dependable way to have one is to pre-book: every transfer site in the Smile Taxi Service network takes child-seat requests, at 100 THB per seat on the regional booking sites.

How to book a car seat
Five steps to a transfer with a child seat
- Pick the site for your route from the directory below: a regional site for trips around one area, a nationwide site for anything else.
- Choose a car with room. Count every child, babies included, as a passenger, and count the stroller as a bag.
- Request the seat in the booking notes with each child's age, weight and height. Two children need two seats.
- Ask for written confirmation by WhatsApp, LINE or email that the seat is booked for your pickup.
- Check the seat before you set off: firmly fitted, harness or belt snug on your child. If something is wrong, say so before the car moves.
What to tell the operator
- Number of adults and children, with each child's age, weight and height
- Whether your baby needs a rear-facing seat, so the operator can say honestly if they can provide one
- Suitcases, stroller, travel cot and anything bulky
- Flight number for airport pickups, and the hotel's exact address
Do taxis in Thailand legally need a child seat?
No. Section 123 of the Land Traffic Act, amended in 2022, says children aged 6 or under must ride in a child safety seat and that everyone in the car must wear a seatbelt. The child-seat part only became enforceable with a Royal Thai Police announcement effective 17 August 2023, and that announcement exempts for-hire vehicles such as taxis, and public transport.
For private cars without a seat, the announcement accepts fallbacks: the child sits in the back, an adult looks after the child or the child wears a seatbelt, and the driver drives carefully in the left lane. That is a legal minimum, not a safety standard.
Two things are still unclear: whether app-booked ride-hailing cars and privately registered transfer cars count as exempt. We do not guess. The practical answer is the same either way: in a crash, a small child is safest in a child seat, whatever the car's registration.
Seatbelts are not optional. The same section requires belts for the driver and every passenger in every row. If a rear belt is missing or broken, ask for another car.
Why don't meter taxis carry car seats?
A meter taxi is an ordinary car hailed on the street or taken from an airport queue, so there is no booking step where a seat could be requested. At Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) the rank is on Level 1 between Gates 4 and 7, and you pay the meter plus a 50 THB airport surcharge and tolls. To use meter taxis with a young child, bring a seat that installs with a seatbelt.

Which car fits a family with child seats?
Every child, babies included, is a passenger, and a child seat fills that child's place. Bulky seats can also make the seat beside them hard to use, so when in doubt, go one size up.

Should you bring your own car seat to Thailand?
It depends on how you will move around. If you will use pre-booked transfers for the airport and the long legs, requesting a seat each time is usually simpler than carrying one. Bring your own if any of these apply:
- You will rent a car, or rely on meter taxis or ride-hailing.
- Your baby must ride rear-facing and you want to be sure of the exact seat.
- Your child has medical or special needs that call for a particular seat.
- You want the same familiar seat for a child who hates change.
A light seat that installs with an ordinary seatbelt is the most flexible, because anchor points vary from car to car. Airlines handle car seats differently, as checked bags or on board, so check your airline's rules before you fly. Frequently asked questions
Do Bangkok airport taxis have car seats?
Not as a rule. Airport meter taxis are taken from a queue, so no seat can be reserved, and taxis are exempt from the child-seat rule. Pre-book a transfer with a seat or bring your own.
Is it illegal for my child to ride in a taxi without a car seat?
No. The 2023 police announcement that put the child-seat rule into effect exempts for-hire vehicles such as taxis, and public transport. The seatbelt rule still applies to everyone in the car, and the safety risk for a small child is the same in any car.
How much does a child seat cost with a transfer?
On the Smile Taxi Service network's regional booking sites a child seat is 100 THB per seat, and the fee is shown when you book. Nothing is charged at booking: you pay the driver in baht at the end, or ask by WhatsApp or LINE for a PayPal card link (5% extra).
Can I choose an infant seat, a toddler seat or a booster?
No operator can promise a particular model, so give each child's age, weight and height when you book and ask for written confirmation of what will be fitted. If your baby must ride in a rear-facing infant seat, the safest plan is to bring your own.
Does a child seat take up a passenger place?
Yes. Two adults with two children in seats and a stroller need at least an SUV (up to 5 passengers and 4 bags).
Can we use Grab with a baby in Thailand?
Ride-hailing is legal in Thailand when booked through a certified app, but we found no way to request a child seat through the apps in Thailand. If you plan to use them with a baby or toddler, bring your own seat.
What if our flight is delayed?
The first 60 minutes of waiting at network airport pickups are free, and a person checks your flight, so a delay moves the pickup. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
Do all the drivers speak English?
Not every driver does. Ask for an English-speaking driver when you book (subject to availability); the booking itself is confirmed in writing.
